A filter bubble forms when people are mostly exposed to content that matches their own interests, beliefs, and opinions. They end up in a kind of “bubble” that shields them from opposing perspectives.
Online, this effect is amplified by algorithms: A personalized, algorithm-driven newsfeed can give users the impression that their extreme views are “normal” or widely shared – reinforcing those beliefs.
Sometimes, information platforms turn into so-called echo chambers: closed spaces where like-minded individuals communicate only among themselves. Other opinions don’t enter – and their own messages rarely leave. The result is isolation from the outside world.
