Radicalization describes a process in which individuals or groups adopt increasingly radical or extremist beliefs and behaviors.
Security authorities distinguish between radicalism and extremism. Radicalism refers to intense, often extreme ways of thinking or acting that aim to address social problems at their root (radix in Latin). Unlike extremism, radicalism does not necessarily seek to overthrow democratic values or the constitutional order.
However, radicalization can lead to extremism – though not always. People radicalize for different reasons. Key triggers often include identity crises and a need for affirmation, belonging, or direction. Extremist actors try to exploit these moments by offering seemingly meaningful solutions – based on their own political or ideological worldviews.
