Umgang im Netz

Conspiracy theories and disinformation are often spread online – sometimes unintentionally, but frequently on purpose and usually by unknown sources. If you’re dealing with such content on a personal level, you’ll find helpful advice here.

The following strategies can help you respond responsibly online and prevent the further spread of false information.

Don’t share or like

If you’re not sure whether a post contains a conspiracy theory or disinformation, don’t forward, like, or share it.This helps prevent the unintentional spread of false or misleading claims and keeps them from gaining more visibility.

Point it out

If someone has shared a conspiracy theory or disinformation on social media – even unintentionally – you can politely let them know in a private message.Keep it respectful and avoid starting arguments. Debates in public threads are often unproductive and can escalate quickly.

Refute and question

Even online, it can help to refute [Link 402 – anchor: Refute] or question [Link 402 – anchor: Challenge] a conspiracy theory or piece of disinformation.By correcting misinformation and exposing contradictions, you can help debunk the content and protect others who may be reading. However, people who already believe strongly in the theory are unlikely to change their minds. Discussions can be exhausting and emotionally draining.

Refute and question

In some cases, it may help to respond with humor or irony, pointing out the contradictions or absurd aspects of the theory in a light-hearted way.But be careful – if the tone becomes too sarcastic or cynical, it can backfire and entrench opposing views even more.

Report and file complaints about harmful content and hate speech

Disinformation and extremist conspiracy theories may include content that violates the law – especially when it involves hate speech. You can report such content directly to the platform. This is particularly important when it involves incitement to violence, antisemitism, or content that endangers public health.

Criminally relevant content should also be reported to your local police department or submitted online via the REspect! reporting portal .
